Safety The MIT Flying Club is proud to host Ken MacDonald of the FAA on April 24th at 7pm.  Ken will be speaking about runway safety at both towered and non-towered airports in room 33-206.  More info about Mr. MacDonald's talk can be found below.

Runway Incursions - The true facts of Ground Safety

Two 747s miss colliding by 80 feet at Chicago O'hare Airport, two Cessna's collide on the runway at Sarasota Florida killing all on board, two aircraft narrowly miss at Logan Airport last June 9th.  Runway Safety is one of the NTSB top priorities.  At this seminar we will analyze several runway incursions for cause and develop stratigies that can be used to stay safe at airports.

Kenneth J. MacDonald holds an Airline Transport Pilot Certificate and has over 24,000 hours of flight time as an instructor and corporate pilot.  He has a certificate in aviation safety from USC and an MA from Lesley University where he studied behavioral science and human error in flight operations.  He is currently a consultant in the field of runway safety at the FAA New England Regional office. Carl Dietrich, CEO/CTO of Terrafugia and winner of the 2006 Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, will present the history of roadable aircraft and give an overview of Terrafugia's Transition Personal Air Vehicle on Tuesday, April 11 in 33-206 from 7:30-8:30pm.   Feedback from the audience will be sought.

Terrafugia is a general aviation startup company founded by three graduates of MIT's Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.   Terrafugia's mission is the expansion of personal mobility through the practical integration of land and air travel.  The FAA's new Light Sport Aircraft/Sport Pilot rule has opened a window of opportunity to bring certified aircraft to the general aviation community at a substantially reduced cost compared to typical Part 23 certification.  Terrafugia is developing the "Transition" personal air vehicle, a roadable aircraft that will be certified under this new rule.  Capable of cruising in the air at 120mph and driving on the ground at highway speeds, the Transition will allow non-instrument rated private pilots or sport pilots to effectively use their license for practical transportation, as opposed to the status quo where VFR pilots can only travel when the weather is nice.  By giving these VFR pilots an acceptable diversion option at all times, Terrafugia will fundamentally increase the functionality of their license while simultaneously reducing the instances of "get-there-itis" and improving the overall safety record of general aviation.
